My dog Riley

Riley is my dog.  He came from Istanbul.  This is our story.

Riley was rescued by the Golden Retriever Rescue organization from the streets of Istanbul.  In Istanbul they have a large street dog population.  The culture there does not approve of euthanasia and have a program in place to try to control the population and health of street dogs.  They capture the dog, spay or neuter, immunize, ear tag them, treat illnesses and return them to the streets.

I adopted Riley 3 months ago from Golden Retriever Rescue. GR found him in a shelter there in Istanbul.  He came to Canada on a plane. He even has his own passport! When he arrived in Toronto, his foster mom Nancy, was there to meet him at the airport and take him home. I don’t think he ever had a home because he was a street dog.

Riley was seen by a vet here. He’s healthy, but he had a wonky front left leg. Probably a vehicle accident from when he was on the street. The vet recommended amputation as the leg was just being dragged around. It was useless. Nancy was great, she took care of Riley after the surgery and into recovery.

I adopted him two weeks later and he came to live with my husband and me and our other Golden Rescue Malibu (13). They think Riley is about two. He’s doing great, loves to run, play, get brushed all the good stuff. He’s quite an escape artist though. He gets out of his collar easily because he has a small head. We haven’t done too much training yet. Getting used to living in a house and with a family was a big adjustment for him. Now he is ready.

Let the training begin. I was fortunate to find Tripawds and with all the resources available and Riley being very clever it should be a fun time for us.

Thank you Tripawds for all that you do for dogs and cats with an amputation and their families. ❤
